  • 3" body lift

Want to fit some 33" tyres so I'm considering a 3" body over my existing 2" supension lift. Anyone ever done this to a Second gen auto before?

Just want to know what the pitfalls are before I get it done.

Will the steering column need lengthening? What about the auto and hi/lo shift- won't they disapear through the floor? LA Supertrux don't think this will be a problem but I'm not so sure.

Have a look here http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BodyLiftKit.shtml There are comprehensive instructions that should answer your questions and Roger is really helpful. Even a good place to buy the kit from with the state of the dollar at the moment (it's where mine came from)

L A Super tucks done my 3" body lift last year the only mod apart from the bumper brackets was an extension on the steering colume, radiator staid in the same place and no mods needed for auto shift or transfer stick.

          TOYMOTA,

If you don't mind me asking- how much did they charge you for the fitted lift kit? Are you pleased with the result? Did LA complete the lift in a day?

Have you got a before-n-after photo at all?

          Thanks

For the kit and fitting it cost about £600,it took them 2 days to do it,and they did do a very good job, had no probs yet and it was done in June 04',you can tell the difference as well because when i gave them my truck i had just fitted some new 31's and after the lift the tyres now look to small really needs 33's now ,i'll try and sort some pics.

£600. As Monty Python would say "I think i'm gonna have..............a cardiac arrest" With a 3" lift you should raise the radiator, lengthen the steering rod, relocate your front bumper too,and get adapters for both your shifters to compensate. else they will disappear through the floor. If you dont lengthen them, then the hole in the floor that they go through will no longer be adequate and will have to be modified. Most popular method is the cut the shifters and weld a new piece 3" long to the centre so they return to their original relative position. You are alos gonna stretch your brake pipes a fair bit, so be careful. See Roger Browns site. Top quality stuff for a fraction of the price. He will give you very honest answers to your questions and not try to rip you off. JimL has dealt with him too with no probs.

Do you think you've got room for an intercooler above the engine now too? That might be a usefull advantage of a big body lift.

A 2" body lift should be enough.

I would of thought so cos the engine is sitting 3" lower than standard.

Got the quote back LA Suptrux.......£842 fitted!!

www.4Crawler.com and a DIY fit is begining to look increasingly attractive. Something to do at Easter maybe?

                      Will e-mail them shortly.

So what you saying i shouldn't be able to use my auto stick or transfer stick because they have dissappered through the floor and my brakes are now totally useless now because the pipes have stretched and i have fluid p"£$$%g out of them.
I guess this last 8 months since i've had the lift kit fitted i must have been just dreaming it then, hope i wake up soon then eh!!

LA Supertrux obviously made all the above mods during the fitting of your lift kit (that's what you paid them for). Radiator and bumper drop brackets are required. An extension bracket for auto shift stick is needed (design depends on the type of autobox you have). Haven't worked out which solution is required with my particular Hi Lo shift lever yet. For a 3" lift they will also have had to extend the steering column by an inch or so. Brake pipes they probably didn't have to touch (but varies from car to car depending on how much 'stretch' there is in the coils of the hard brake lines). All this work plus the body lift work itself and all the of components is what LA Supertrux sort out for you. It will take a whole day at least if all goes well- but that's still £50/hour labour.

Now that I have read a lot more about 4Runner body lifts on www.4Crawler.com , Delboy's Surf write up and other places- it isn't nearly as complicated as I had initially thought (no more so than other work on the Surf I have done) provided you start with the right components. By that I mean the right type of steering column extension and shifter brackets. The body lift hardware is universal. So I might be tempted to tackle it myself. Perhaps then I can justify buying some decent brand 33" tyres rather than the remoulds I had in mind.

All the components I need work out at about £120 (inc shipping) from 4Crawler (now scaled down to a 2" lift).
