I was going to suggest the same as stara and skiper but re-read it and noticed his probs went away for the summer?? Unless he got the job 'done' on the plugs at around May and now he has got a fuel leak. I had two leaks one sraight after the other. The leak on the engine side of the fuel pump meant she started after coaxing and then ran badly. The leak on the opposite side of the pump meant there was no juice getting to the pump and she wouldnt start at all. Check the jubilee clip at the feed to the pump is on right and isnt biting into the hose.

PS did you ever get your cheque Skiper? (stick an edit onto your post to avoid hijacking )

Is it because the glow plugs are supposed to stay on for a while until the engine is a bit warmer? Maybe the water temp sensor telling the fuel dist that the engine is warm when its not?

any advice very welcome - particularly by those behind me in the morning traffick.

      Thanks in advance.
I have a similar problem but its not all the time, I have noticed on cold mornings mine sometimes has a real lack of power for a few minutes. Can be quite hair raising when pulling out of the first junction at the end of the road each morning.

when you start it let it idle for a few minutes to warm up before you pull off, it will be ok

Madmart, I see you have a '91, which will be an EFI ( the other guy's need to fill out your vehicle specs, so we know what you're driving) the cold start mechanism will be electronically controlled via the ECU and sensors.

When cold the ECU should richen the fuel mixture and increase rpm, to get smooth running and the right amount of power, so if you've tried new plugs etc then I would be looking at water temp sensor, and cold start mechanisms for the fault.

i have had some sort of success with this. if you turn the ignition on . do not touch any pedals, leave the ignition on while that damn buzzer sounds for about twenty seconds. you will hear a click from the engine the car then seems to start easily
