My bottom hose needs a drive before it warms up, not just idling for a while. How bout taking the rad out, Nev, its worth a try

Check your thermostat, check for aire and then check for a blocked radiator. Water circulates round the engine coming to the bottom last so it will be the last thing to heat up.

      Cheers

It's recon rad from Roughtrax- been fitted about three weeks. Today I've just flushed the cooling system out and re-filled with Toyota Red + Redline Water Wetter.

The bottom hose on my rad is also cold, even after a 10 mile drive this afternoon, and all the rad is cold, extcept the top chamber, and top hose.
The heater works fine and hot.
recently put on new rad cap,
wondering if i should try a new thermostat and a flush of the rad?

don't use water wetter, that's for race cars!... the usual coolant will do the same job.
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

mine is the same. infact most cars that ive had have done this. those that know better will put me right on this, but isnt that how it should be as the coolant as gone through the rad to cool down thus making the bottom hose substantially cooler than the top

slim - is the radiator on your truck hot all over, or just at hot?
suppose it makes sense what you say, would be daft if the outlet hose was hot as inlet!

No - just the top tank and inlet hose are hot. Even after a 20 mile run the bottom hose is still amazingly cool. Either it has always been like this (and I had never noticed after three years of ownership) or the new radiator is really efficient. Water is obviously circulating round the system since the heaters all work fine and the engine hasn't overheated (touch wood) yet.

Water Wetter is supposed to improve the cooling efficiency of the system too by improving thermal contact at the water metal interface- I just didn't think it would have a noticable effect.....

interested to note it came in genuine toyota parts packaging, and rated at 82 deg C,
