Anyone know y a rev counter should not be working on a L reg 3 litre surf? Is there a fuse that runs it or do i need to get a new counter?

Take out the instrument cluster, you may find that the cable connections on the circuit board have got a bit dry and dusty, if you remove all the connections, clean the board connections and reconnect it may be OK. Other than that it could be the ECU connections (think the signal comes from the ECU) or the rev counter itself. There is not much you can do if one of the small wires in the rev counter has come disconnected - vibration can cause them to break, they are too short and fragile to be able to solder reliably - tried that on my electronic speedo - had to get a new one in the end.

    Cheers
