  • Stiffen me up!

I have a 3.0L TD surf - the ride seems pretty sloppy even with the suspension on hard - After looking through the forum it seems that replacing the rear springs is the way to go - the question is - should I replace the shocks too? will replacing them help stiffen up the ride?

is it worth replacing both front and rear sets? will this help with the handling etc??

or as they are not leaking and seem to do their job (i.e. dampen the movement) will replacing the springs alone be enough?

if it is a good idea to replace the shocks - can you buy stiffer ones?

I replaced the rear springs on mine with 20% stiffer ones from Milners - £40 + VAT. The back end now rides about 1.5 in higher and putting the caravan on the back doesn't drop the back end nearly as far as before. The shocks are relatively easy to replace. Most on here seem to go for Pro Comp but if the damping isstill working OK I'd leave them to another time or when the start leaking.

I also fitted the Milner +20% springs and left the shocks as stock. The truck went from handling like a Chevrolet to handling like a European car. I have rarely used the hard suspension setting since replacing the springs, although it does come in useful in high winds and reduces the roll caused when overtaking big artics.

If your shocks are OK, it'll be fine, you only need new shocks if your fitting lift springs, and want to make the most of the extra suspension travel.

They don't contribute to sagginess/wallowing much, just bounce stopping juties.
