  • Auto box help / ideas wanted

    hi all

Hope one of you chaps can help me with this one, oil seal went on my auto box, had it replaced by my chap who does that sort thing for me, new one also went after my wife drove it about 30miles, the only thing I/ we can think of is the oil cooler in rad or pump in the geabox has given up, is there any of telling if its the oil cooler b4 i fit new box? as old box didn't survive second time around hence the plea in wanted section.

    cheers

    Dai.

Was it the one in the autobox or the rear crankshaft oil seal on the engine. If it was the rear crankshaft oil seal, it was probably put in incorrectly, it is easy to push them in too far and then they will leak again.

    Cheers

Like Andy says, are you sure its the Auto box seal, not the crankshaft seal?

You don't say what seal, input shaft? check for free play in the bearing, or the shaft where the bearing sits for grooves.

The cooler won't 'break' as such, just leak. If the pump is stuffed, you won't have any drive, or very little/

The one in gearbox, will drive in low and reverse only. Also is there some way of identifying boxes, ie some sort of plate with details on, as may have found 2nd hand box but long way to travel if it wrong....

        Cheers

Sounds like one of the vacumn pump seals has gone. I had this years ago on my first wife's Mk 2 Escort 1.3 auto. Gave up on 1st & rev on a trip to Great Yarnouth from Bristol. Wasn't too bad until we went the wrong way in Norwich on a saturday afternoon when Norwich were playing at home. Try getting out of that when you can't go backwards.

On mine there's a blue / silver plate on the right hand side of the 'box that says AISIN and has model numbers on it. Also, the silver plate on the bulkhead in the engine bay has a transmission code on it - mines an A340E.
