  • Transfer box front output flange growl

    Hi guys

I recently bought a manual 3rd gen, 1996 model with no centre differential. I only drove a few hundred kilometres, all on asphalt, before garaging the truck and starting a major overhaul. Because of this, I never tried the 4WD system and I need to check this is all working before getting the car back together.

My first question is regarding noise... There were no unusual noises when driving the truck in 2WD, but when I get under her and turn the front output fage on the transfer box, there is quite a lot of growl from the transfer box. It doen't feel rough and there is no slop in it, so I am wondering if this is just a nirmal noise from the slack in the chain?

I drained the oil from the transfer and it looked absolutely fine, no swarf or anything.

My Hilux pickup makes a similar growl if I do it, but quite a lot less ovbvious. It's a gear driven transfer however, so maybe this just means it's quieter??

I've got the engine out and will pull out the gearbox, I'm pretty set on opening up the transfer box, unless someone on here assures me that a good bit of growl is normal!

    Cheers

    Daniel
