  • Overheating and hard turnover 3.0 TD

Hi all, hoping for some help!

We're having some problems with our '94 3.0 td and wondering if it's two separate problems or connected.

    1. The car has been overheating and leaking radiator fluid - the radiator is only 1 yr old and has been checked and that's not the issue, all of the pipes are fine and there is no leakage when not overheating.

    2. The car is also really hard to turn over (minimum 10 seconds and pumping the pedal helps) and when it does it spits out a ton of black smoke. Runs perfect afterwards, no peaks or dips on revs. After the car has been running it is easier to start again, BUT we highly doubt that's because of the temperature as where we live it's rarely below 20c outside. It's also consuming more fuel.

Thinking this is a fuel injection issue, we have checked all of the circuit for leaks or somewhere air can get in but all looks good. The only strange this is that the manual fuel primer won't prime, it stays soft (new replacement). Also added a stop return valve. No holes in the fuel tank. Heat plugs are new. Have run through injection cleaner a couple of times. Have tried the double key turn trick in ignition. Have checked the thermostat. Now we're just scratching our heads!

    Thanks in advance!

1: sounds like a cracked head.

2: sounds like the glow plugs are not working (easy check with a voltmeter on the rail)
