  • Turbo oil feed and return pipe replacement

    Hi all,

Post number 2 and I thought I could lend some advice for others:

I replaced the oil feed and return pipe yesterday and managed to do the whole job in about 3 hours without needing to take anything else off the truck (except undertrays of course).

Put the truck up on ramps which gave a good amount of room under the truck to manoeuvre.

    Remove both front bash guards/undertrays.

Easy access to the 2 nuts at the bottom of the return pipe and easy access to the 2 bolts on the top of the pipe where it joins onto the turbo.

Just the 17mm banjo bolt to go.

You can get your hand up to the bolt but in order to get a spanner onto it (and turn the spanner) you need to remove the small metal brace that stops the pipe flexing under load, nut at the top and bolt at the bottom, again, easy to access.

I needed two different brands of spanner to undo the banjo bolt. The two different spanners were just slightly off from one another. This allowed one spanner to turn the banjo by about 1 mm and then the next spanner to turn the next 1 mm and so on. Needed to alternate the spanners about 5 times until the bolt was loose enough to undo by hand.

Once the banjo bolt was undone the pipe was easy to remove and wiggle out.

In putting the new pipe on we had to take one of the studs off the turbo to squeeze it on. Then simply put the stud back on and did everything back up in the reverse of the above.

One thing to note, the reason my pipe had split is because the metal brace had snapped. Therefore, if you're going to do this job, spend a further £11 on a new brace and locking nut so that if you find the same you don't get stuck halfway through the job, unable to finish. Worth ordering and replacing anyway to prevent it snapping shortly and then you have to do the whole job again!

I hope this helps and gives you confidence that the job can be done in a morning without taking off the wheel, turbo, elbows etc etc.

    Good luck
    Alex

    Cheers
    Submission?...Now that's a bit of a problem.

From toyota mate - I bought all the bits from my local dealer but they took a couple of days to come in to the uk. That way I could be sure that I wasn't getting a cheap knock off part that would need replacing again in the near future - for the price it didn't seem worth shopping around.

Good luck and have confidence that you can do it the way I did - even if you loose faith half way (I did!).
