Gen 3 tailgate lock not releasing

I have 1997 tailgate where the whole thing is hinged at the top. There is no key for the back door it all gets done on the central locking.

However, the door won't open. I have stripped it down, reassembled it and it worked fine for a week, then back to not opening. Is it fixable or of I need a replacement part. Been all,over eBay etc and can't find one. I assume Toyota don't stock parts for 18 year old cars.

Any ideas what's wrong or where to get a a replacement mechanism?

What do you mean, no key? On mine its the same key for the doors and the ignition, and im guessing you have that one?
