  • Wiper squeak.

Our 3rd Gen has been suffering from wiper squeak for a week or two - new blades needed (or so we thought)
New blades fitted - squeak still there.
Wipers lifted off screen - squeak still there!

The wiper mech itself was making the noise and needed a good lube. To get at the mech, the wiper arms and trim below the windscreen needs to be removed - 6 x crosshead screws and 4 x plastic press studs on a Gen 3.
First action was to spray grease onto the moving bits which helped a bit but didn't completely cure the problem. The joints have nice rubber covers which make getting the grease inside very difficult.

To do a full lube job, the wiper mech needs to be removed from the car. 3 x 10mm headed bolts hold each wiper spindle in place and 4 x 10mm headed bolts to undo the wiper motor.
The wiper motor can be pulled back just enough to undo the 12mm nut holding on the wiper mech. Mark the arm position on the motor spindle before undoing the nut. When this is released, the mech can be removed from the drivers side just below the windscreen.

Once removed from the car, one spindle would turn by hand but the other was siezed and needed a lever to turn it. On other cars I have worked on (Alfas mainly), the spindles and ball joints can be stripped out for greasing but on the Hilux they are riveted together.
Lubing the ball joints is straightforward - lift up the rubber boots and squirt some grease inside.
The spindles are more difficult. I used a combination of WD40 type stuff and white spray grease. By moving the spindles with a lever, tapping from the top and bottom with a small hammer and repeated spraying with lube the rust/crap gradually got flushed out and the spindles moved more freely. It took about 45 mins of work to get them loose enough to turm freely by hand.
Refitting is the reverse but it took a couple of goes before everything would line up.

Hope you find this useful. All our trucks are getting on a bit now and this sort of problem is to be expected (in the UK at least!). Much cheaper than a new wiper mechanism.
