I have a dilemma - after getting stuck in some deep water a few weeks ago my auto gearbox has now lost drive completely.
Last weekend the AT.P light came on, 500 mils of fluid got it going again.
Once home 4 ltrs of fluid was added and the vehicle drove uphill and down dale for nearly an hour.
However on the next trip whilst climbing a greenlane the gearbox lost torque again, with no response at all from the gears and noise when engaging park which sounded like the handbrake being pulled on!
The vehicle was recovered to an auto box specialist who for a modest sum has tested the box and reported that it needs a complete rebuild at a cost of around £2000.
A few people have suggested that the box may be recoverable by draining out changing the filter and driving for a short period - then repeating the process a few times in a short period of time, thus flushing to box and internals.
this is certainly a cheaper option!
Have any of you guys experience of this?
The truck is working vehicle (Hilux Surf 3.0 1994) so reliability is key.
The truck is in good condition otherwise having just passed an MOT>
Look forward to hearing from you
