can you guys help please , do you know of anything that would make the 4wd light on the dash come on and engage 4wd with the transfer in 2wd and the button on side of transfer stick out. when i pressed the 4wd button you could hear the relay clicking and the light would dim but it would stay in 4wd , i even tried putting into low ratio and then back again but 4wd light stayed on and also selecting all gears in auto box and the same . went into shop came back out and started car same at first reversed out of space and then 4wd light went out and worked normally shifting on the fly as well was fine, i am concearned that this is an indicator of problems looming
    its a 1992 2.4 td auto
    any advice welcome

Sometimes the drive line will bind and be tricky to disengauge, you need to reverse up like you said.

Sounds like you had it 4wd on hard surface.

Nothing to worry about (unless you keep using 4wd on tarmac and other hard surfaces, then some thing will break/wear out rapidly)
