  • Front brakes, pulls to left when breaking and a clunk

Apologies if this is in totally the wrong place or someone has asked this before, I have been Surfless and absent from here for 2 years and forgot how this works....

My 1995 Gen 2 surf pulls to the left when braking (but kind of tugs left when you stop breaking), also makes a kind of clunky sound that seems like it comes from the left hand side. I thought it might be the right hand not working , hence pulls to left but the noise and tug on release of brakes kind of makes me think its the left hand side binding. Confused ? I am!!!!

Any one got any ideas, the discs and pads have not been changed in 4 years (how long do they normally last with avarage annual millage approx 5000)?

Am I looking at new discs, pads and calipers on both sides?

Do you have to replace the calipers or can I just try and give them a little TLC?

Do I have to replace both sides at the same time with brake components?

    Could it be anything else?

Is it a difficult job to change these parts? Will I have to drain the breaklines fully or just bleed the fluid through from the resiviour?

Any help, thoughts or suggestions VERY welcome as there is no way she is getting through her medical (MOT) with this problem.

    Thanks

      Hi Robert
Firstly , thanks for the generous offer. I should have mentioned in the post that the Surf is sat on my mates drive in Hale, near Farnham Gu9 postcode. I dont know if that makes things tricky for you? If so not to worry.
Secondly, how good are you with these things, have you done brakes before;-). I only ask as its one of those things I am always a little concerned about if I mess it up!
As it's not at mine (Guildford) I will only have my mates tools , but I guess we are just needing a diagnosis at this point. How do I message you directly with my mobile number so we could have a chat?
      Cheers
      Jon

Best bet is to order up new disks and pads, unless yours are very good.
Calipers can be rebuilt at home with a repair from Ebay (Big red parts or something like that) The biggest problem is forcing out the stuck pistons. I used the cars own system to remove them. Remove pads and identify which pistons are moving, then block these with the old pads or shims of metal. Push the brake pedal like billio and the stuck piston should pop out. Be prepared for fluid spillage!

This might give you an insight:-

Unfortunately it looks like its not going to happen today. My friend works abroad and has been call off. I really need to move the truck back to Guildford so I can work on it here , although that's not ideal either a limited space. If I was slightly organised I'd be dangerous.
