  • Oil change, now no drive.

After spending a few hours on hear, I'll just ask...

After changing the oil, a few times in both of the Surfs (2nd gen, 3.0l G's), it seemed a simple task..
So my old man goes out, without me and does his one yesterday. After changing the oil, the dipstick says there's too much oil, by a long way.. He said he measured the amount that came out and put in the same amount.. About 8 pints (4.5l).. Which is not the amount I thought should come out, anyway.. Thought it should be more like 6.5l
Also, after he drove it back into it's spot on the drive, it now won't move, when in drive or reverse..

So, after leaving it, over night, it still showed the oil to be way over.. We emptied about 3 pints out and have run it, without the oil cap on, too see if it's air problem... Now waiting for it to settle..

But would too much oil stop it finding a gear (sensors?) or is that something else? Bearing in mind, it was fine before the oil change..

I don't know, it's not in my horrid Haynes manual I just checked....but I wouldn't mind betting it's similar to the engine amount...and if the box is old could be a similar colour...

            Found this online:
            Gearbox ATF Dexron III
1.2 Litres drain & refill re-new approx every 24 months
6.5 Litres dry fill (from rebuild)

Got to run, good luck, I'll check back later on developments!

Sounds like you have drained the ATF fluid instead of the Engine oil, and put engine oil in instead of ATF fluid, hence too much oil in engine.

Start up and check ATF dipstick...

                Well...

My life sucks.. I study and work my butt off on the pair of Surfs we have..

I tell ya.. I said to the old man to leave it until I'm there, but nooooooooo, he goes off and changes the oil himself.. Looks at me, as if to say I'M the idiot, when I try, I mean, try to say if he's removed the wrong oil..

It's only when he's shouted at me, a lot and then shows me the bolt he's undone, does the penny finally (but slowly) start to drop.. Only when I point out it actually says DII on it AND I point out the correct sump bolt...

                Feck!

                I'm 44.. Not 14, by the way...

Check that the transfer lever hasn't been knocked into neutral by accident, it's easy to do when getting into the truck.

I know - slightly off topic, but this may be relevant here, particularly if you've lost your 'old man':

So, any recommendations on what to put back into the gearbox?

I found this, but is it DII, or DIII..? (it should be DII, in mine)

Anything else out there that's worth a look.

Thanks for all the responses, as usual..
