Hi I am looking for some help!
Iv just bought a 1996 hilux surf 3.0L diesel Auto
The auto box has packed in! I am going to replace it but Im looking for some advice if any one else has had a auto box pack up on here.
I am mechanically minded but been told It could be the torque converter not the box gone but there is a burnt oil smell! I think the box is cooked advice please.
196k miles and not a clue with autos!

From the burn smell do I change the box or go for the fluid coupling too?

If the box is out, it makes sense to do them both, otherwise if it doesn't work you got all the labour on taking the box out to do/pay again.

            Yea true! Thanks "Growler"
Next question is there any benefit/hindrence if I fit a 2.4 auto box (will it fit) on my 3.0 or will I loose top end but increase 0-60? Like a manual car would?
            Sorry for daft questions!

              Hi Graham, welcome on board.
Ebbw Vale eh? I'm near Newbridge.

Does you transmission work at all?

No, the 2.4 transmission won't fit your truck by the way.

Are you checking the gearbox fluid level with the engine idling?
