Lol, thanks for putting me right! Years ago I saw a transit van pulling a trailer with what looked like the fuselage of a hurricane or a spitfire on a uk motorway, the OP brought that image back to me.

Hello again to all you good people.
As you might have guessed from my jolly approach, I have sorted the problem, with help from all who contributed and gave their opinions.
I took your advice and bought replacement rad cap and thermostat. put the cap on for the journey home, and the temperature was to a 1/4, this encouraged me to get down and dirty to replace the stat, which was not so easy to locate and access, but as soon as all in and engine fired up, the temperature was in the normal position, and plenty of heat in the cabin.
Another Surf back on the road where it belongs and may it keep on rolling for another 108000 miles.
I no longer have an issue with my car to bore all you good people, ( until the next time ), but will be checking the forum on a daily bases to help keep various discussions, alive.
