  • Rear halfshaft play

In the process of changing the rear shoes, and trying to find the source of the a*se vibration at speed, I'v'e found some play in the o/s rear halfshaft.

Basically with the drum and shoes removed I'm left with the backing plate, cylinder, and the center hub section. You can pull/push on this center section by a good 1 - 2mm. The n/s doesn't have any play at all. Removing this section is easy enough and you end up with a long shaft/spline type rod that inserts into the rear axle. With the brake section on the floor, I could see a fair bit of left/right play on the rear bearings.

Now for the question. Anyone done this before and if so, how easy are these to change? It looked machine pressed so I've re-assembled as it was for the time being. I'm not even sure which parts I would order from Milners.

I've already spoken with Streetluge Chris who didn't have any spares (easiest method), and he gave me some good info, but I fear something of this level is above me and going to cost £££'s.

    Cheers.
Everything's easy, when you know how!

There have been a couple of threads discussing this in the last few months. Try doing a search on rear wheel bearings.

Basically the hard bit is changing the bearing on the shaft but you can probably find a local garage who will do this for you. I bought all the bits from Milners, removed the half shafts (and replaced them) and a local garage changed the bearings for me for around £40. Total cost was around £80 ish for both sides. As to parts you'll need a bearing, bearing retaining ring, two oil seals (inner & outer), O ring and circlip (might as well replace the lot)

Kazam did his rear wheel bearings and made a tool to do it with . There was a thread on here covering it . He may have the dimensions for the tool for you to make or maybe rent off him .
Edit : It seems some people gave negative feed back to Kazam401 method of repair/replacement and so he removed what I thought was a good reveiw of the job . Once again the forum members shoot each other down instead of helping each other . I had enough of this negative feeling this weekend on here ! Rant over .

Really did my head in that Rick, I think it was a case of mouth in gear, brain in neutral.
