  • Rear wheel bearing replacement gen 3

    Hi guys,
Is it realistically possible to remove/replace the rear wheel bearings and abs gear from the axle shaft at home without access to a press - but maybe using a puller of some sort. I've never seen an axle off the vehicle so just wondering what others do.
    Cheers

One bloke on here did it with about 3 sets of bearing pullers.

Easier to take half shaft to a garage and have them remove / refit bearing.

I have just had one done at our local garage while I watched. I think that unless you have good skills and the correct tools that the likely outcome of a DIY job would be a damaged halfshaft and broken ABS ring.
Having seen the mechanic struggle, I am glad I didn't try to do it myself.

        Rear bearing renewal

Rob, Mark thanks. I am hoping that it might be possible to save money by removing the half shaft but I guess that most garages would want to do the whole job.
When I bought the surf it came complete with existing leaking hub which I was intending to put off doing for a couple of weeks until things warm up a bit. It was quite a bad leak had obviously been ignored for a some time as there was mud caked oil everywhere. I got underneath yesterday to have a closer look and to check the diff breather and diff oil level. When I unscrewed the diff breather there was a pop just like a champagne cork .sure enough, the breather valve was blocked. Cleaned it in solvent, cleared it and replaced temporarily until I get a new one. Cleaned the wheel rim and went out for a long run and then checked the hub and the leak appears to have stopped. I suppose the seals will probably need replacing anyway before very long but hopefully it may hold for a week or two until warmer weather. There must have been quite a pressure build up in the diff to cause it to pop like that when it was removed.

          you mean like this?
I tried it and it didn't work, ( banging it on the floor I mean), however with the aid of a 40 ton press, we just about managed it, but boy was it tough! watch out for the grinding off the ring bit, it can introduce a stress raiser if you nick the half shaft.
Get it out yourself and take it to a good garage. (oh, getting the oil seal in and out was a bit of a struggle as well, you could do with an alignment tool to press the seal in square. Know any wood turners or any one with a lathe?)

            Bearing puller

My local garage did mine and fabricated up a puller which I now have.

PM me if you'd like to hire it - nominal fee plus returnable deposit.
