  • Squealing when pulling away

It seems I have developed a nasty squealing sound when pulling away...

First conclusion everyone jumps to is that it is belts... it's really really not....

We've done all sorts - the noise seems to be coming from the rear of the car. The head was just replaced and all the belts tightened accordingly but the squealing started just before the replacement. It only seems to happen when pulling away hard from a standstill. It is a rotational sound which sounds a little like one of the seal guards on the prop shaft rubbing under extreme load but i can't see any evidence. While I was on doing the head replacement I replaced the oils in the engine, rear diff, transmission and transfer case with the correct ones, and there are no leaks, so it doesn't seem to be that.

One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a large clunk when changing from R to D on the auto box - which with a handy friend was able to distinguish was the prop shaft rotating against the rear diff. Any ideas what the noise could be - I am now reluctant to drive it anywhere but it does seem to drive fine....

The only way I can recreate the issue other than driving away (which makes it difficult to establish exactly WHERE it is coming from) is to put the brakes full on in drive, accelerate and bounce the truck along - although the noise doesn't match the bumping, mroe the rotation of the prop/diff/rear axle.

Any sensible advice much appreciated - anyne heard this before?... any less helpful advice most likely to be met with something humourous though - at least make them funny..... LOL

    It'll be the propshaft U/Js.

Thanks guys, seems pretty logical I was considering doing the UJs as my next thing anyway (see below)

Mine seems to judder under deceleration when i lift off the accelerator nd go into overrun. Feels like it is coming from the back. The clunking when changing gear seems to be the entire prob shifting round IN the diff, not twisting on the UJs but they look nasty and dried out (and mucky) so I am going to replace them anyways whilst giving the propshaft a general bit of a clean/sand blast / paint. I will of course mark up the prop shaft and the diff/drive (but probably sand blast them off by acident...)

If it is not that which is causing the issue then any thing round the diff you could think of?

If it was the diff you would see oil weeping out behind the propshaft flange to indicate that something was amiss inside.

I have the same fault. Started after a pay and play day at Piccadilly woods. Squel under acceleration, vibration at all times and generally doesn't feel very nice.
Is there a step by step on the UJ rebuild/replacement?

According to the Australian version of the Haynes Manual (the Max Ellery Vehicle repair manuals) you <australian accent>take them apart, clean em', grease 'emand put them back together again</off>

You could try getting some ideas from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOEdu...eature=related tho...

If they're squealing and clunking, they're beyond just cleaning and greasing!

                    Had already ordered new ones

EDIT: Which was good as when I finally got a proper look at the prop tonight the rear UJ was er.... made of 3 roller bearings.... and something that resembeled what used to be a roller bearing....

full refurbish of the prop shaft coming up.... and suppose I best order a diff seal too as there seems to be a slight leak - presumably from where it got dunked on an offroad excursion before I had breathers and replaced the oil...

Sounds like you do need to get them yes.

Easy jobs you could do whilst you are under there and if it hasn't been done in a while you could change:
                        • Transfer box oil
                        • Auto trans oil
                        • Rear diff oil
                        • Rear diff front seal (if it is leaking at all)
                        • Add rear diff breather (THINK it is a 3/8inch BSP air connector and some air pipe that you need... (something like this but check the size of the fittting before ordering! http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nk...at=0&_from=R40)
                        • Wire brush off the rust and underseal the chassis and floor pan..
                        • Underseal the back of the rear bumper if it isn't rusted through already...
In fairness you could just pop to Chlemsford and get a new prop shaft for about 65ish quid from lord lucan if you can't be bothered with al lthe faff of changing the UJs...

So change an old rusty propshaft for another old rusty propshaft with U/Js of the same age?

Rear prop shaft UJs now replaced.. got home late so had to stop working before I got the prop back on the truck.. shame.

Is there any harm in driving the truck a short distance up the minor road with only a front prop in 4x4 to check if another odd vibration has gone before I put the prop back on?
