I had a welded front diff in my pickup, and manual hubs, so wasn't a problem on the road, it wasn't really worth effort offroad and just used to break Birfield joints when it was dry, and they are far stronger than the CV's in IFS Surfs.

It also tended to go straight on instead of turn corners in the mud, as when both front wheels are spinning you'd get no grip on either front tyres to turn the car.

A rear manual locker is the best option, an auto locker if on a budget, or just decent tyres and a some decent suspension flex will cover 95% of any offroading you'll come across in the UK.
