  • Squeaking form rear UJ- Only when reversing

I noticed a squeaking sound coming from my truck when reversing the other day. I found that it seems to be coming from the UJ that links into the rear diff.

I got under and had a look, there was no excessive play on the UJ or propshaft or anything like that, so i pumped some grease in there but it didn't cure it. There's no noise whatsoever when driving forward, only when reversing. It only happens when the prop moves, not when the truck's pushed backwards in neutral.

I'd replace the UJ, but it's hard to tell if that's exactly where the sound's coming from, as i can't get under the truck and reverse it at the same time... Just wondered if anyone had any ideas?

    Cheers.

Mine did exactly the same, when I replaced it one cap was worn through on one side only. Easy enough job just make sure you mark the flanges to ensure prop goes back on in same position.

It'll be tight and siezed rather than worn and loose. Take the prop off and it should be obvious which UJ it is, but you may as well do both while it's off.

Thanking you. Unbolt the prop from the rear diff end, then slide the 2 prop parts apart?

That will do to change the rear one, but you'll need to unbolt the other end to change it.

If you leave the top one in and just slide the long part off the splines take note of how the yokes on each half line up, it'll vibrate like a bugger if misaligned when you put it back.

Give it a couple of days for the grease to work through, it's not instant.
