Rear window

Hi
Have just got my first Surf, it's a 95 3.0 SSR-V and very nice it is too!! However the back window got stuck down the other day just as it started to rain, I took the interior trim and metal plate off and between my friend and I we managed to get it back up but now it's obviously stuck up and I can't get in the back of it without climbing over the seats!! When i turn the key in the tailgate I can hear the motor running but the switch on the center console has stopped working also, would anyone have any tips as to what the problem might be and how to repair it.

Hi and welcome.

Sounds like the rubber coupling inside the motor housing has parted
company with the drive, quite a common failing with these trucks.

If you post a wanted ad in the parts section, I'm sure one of the resident
breakers will be along with an offer for a good used motor.

There's also loads on Ebay, or if you prefer new, Roughtrax can supply one,
there a bit pricey though.

If you use the search function here, there's loads of info about everything
to do with these trucks, including fitting rear window motors.

Use the search button and you will find every conceivable problem with the tailgate window and how to fix it!

Check the windows "lock button" sometimes we pressed it unconsciously.
It's a very common mistake.

Can you hear the motor turning and does it move with a little help?

If you can shift the window down, open the tailgate and take off the carpet cover and protective metal plate then close the tailgate and get the window up again, that way you can work on all the gubbins inside from inside the truck (just put the back seats down so if it starts raining there are no worries!

Check the bonding block as described in a thread i started here http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/showthread.php?t=68118 and if you need it permanently repair then I can do it for you if you need it. I sorted mine together by tapping the disc the block was bonded to one side, countersinking the disc the other side and then bolting it all together with 3 bolts. The window now never hesitates to move.

Many thanks for all your help, I took it to bits this eve and had a look at all the gearing and it turns out the nylon gear inside the assembly is pretty well worn so have just ordered a recon unit from e-bay, hopefully will be going up and down again soon!!

check the 2 runners pressed on to the base of the window too - mine were rusted to hell.
