Well I'm glad the OP has found the solution.

Albannach, I apologise for contradicting you, but if you're going to correct someone elses terminology...it should surely be correct? Yes good for me that I've always called it a shock/damper, and a torsion bar is a torsion bar....but also good for Toyota who named it that way too.

My bumpy road rattle went when I replaced the bronze bushes in the hub. No visible wear on the originals but went with new ones.

I think toyota do two lengths of rubbers for the electronic and normal suspension.

Bronze bushes changed ages ago, made no difference other than a nice dent in my wallet

Have a search for the 90-95 4runner factory service manual pdf. It's in there. You'll need a press and various bits of tube etc to replicate the 'special tools'.

As Rob said, you'll need a press of some kind and a manual.

But; I strongly advise you not to tackle this one yourself, the consequences of any fcuk up are potentially serious.

Is the issue getting the bushes back in??

And out sometimes. But the whole thing with stripping suspension/steering/brakes, without knowing what you're doing, kind of wories me. This isn't a personal dig at you; it's a general thing!

Well if it was a Vw I'd have stripped it down, rebuilt it all back up again without a worry... out of the last 30 cars I've had and worked on, this is the first 4x4 and first toyota.. Normally a quick glance through a how to and I'm sorted - more because it shows the right way to do it rather than just trying to work it out..

However if they are a pig to do, then off it'll go to see Tony

What the hell are you argueing about?

Lawsy call the the shock a strut, which its is isn't, thats all, its no big deal. You have McPherson Strut type front suspension (the clue is in the name, the spring and shock are combined, with the bottom of the shock ridgedy fixed and no upper wishbone, which is not to be confused with a plain coil over shock like 2rd Gens) or you have a seperate spring and shock (or damper).

                          Simples.

A Strut holds things up, A Shock dosn't.

Lol, and i apologised for that at the start, so used to them being struts form my VW days..

I think the argument then stemmed cos i called it a shock absorber as thats what it was called on R/Trax site..

The bushes are not that difficult but unless you are confident at taking it all apart and putting it back together, the right way, then leave it to someone more experienced, or at least get that experienced person to guide you.

Well everything is now stripped out..

Yesterday saw a bit of swearing (kept banging my head on the arch liner) but was pretty much straight forward and went well

Power steering box replaced and plumbed back in - hope it doesnt leak
What a fiddly job that is tho

Track rods both sides removed and replaced..

Air can rad removed and pipes (didnt work anyway) belt removed on aircon pump - is it ok to leave like this for a bit or do i need to strip out more?

Lower wishbones removed and now sat waiting to get the old bushes removed and new ones pushed in..
