  • think the rattle is found - bush help please

calipers changed, half the rattle gone, now just the bumpy ground one to sort

so been looking about, it appears I've a fair few worn bushes - wishbone bushes, will go for the poly ones and get them sorted, will do the ARB whilst I'm at it..

Looks like I'll be rebuilding the whole front end over time now..

the only one i cant seem to find anywhere to purchase is the bush for the top of the suspenion strut mount.. is this dealer only?? if so, has anyone got a part number?

and to make things worse, the power steering box has sprung leaks - but thanks to Tintin - that should be sorted very soon

    thanks

    Steve

    No ideas anyone?

Its the bush that sits between the top of the suspension strut and the mount..

I always refered to them as top strut mounts.. but dont know if a proper technical term exists.

Surfs don't have struts; so no matter what you call them, we won't know what you're talking about.

sorry, I've always called them suspension struts..

        front shock absorber then..

where it mounts at the top, there is a bush/rubber mount and mine is badly worn..

Technically, that's a damper. The torsion bar is the shock absorber

They are available from SuperPro, but I wouldn't bother with them.

As for Poly bushes generally; they will wear out quicker, and if the originals are sleeved, you'll need to remove the sleeves and fit them in the new bushes before use. OEM are fine. They've already proven that by lasting 17 years?

Ok, well roughtrax refer to them as shock absorber..

If you look here - http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=139&vid=1507 - it must be the rubber bits on top of them in the picture..

I am after the rubber mounting that sits on top of that part.. shoudl it have come with them??

I have found poly bushes for the bottom of the it and wishbones fine, but cannot find the one for the top anywhere

There's a couple of different part numbers. I think there's two lengths for the "cushion" as toyota call it. Your model and Frame number may determine which is used.

If you measure the shock absorber shaft and the OD of the metal retainers for the cushions then just get them with correct hole size and about 2/3rds the diameter of the retainers. Once compressed to the retainer OD then they should be compressed about the right amount.

BTW I say a Torsion Bar is a spring, not a shock absorber.

SPF2755LK should be the ones you want.

It's a damper; it dampens the resonance in the springs after the springs have absorbed the shock from the surface being driven on.. Calling it a shock absorber is one of those creeping changes that happen. I did say 'technically'

I prefer the original rubber as well but some of the Superpro kits do come with new shells and sleeves, so no need to try and salvage the old sleeves which over there would usually be rusty.

Thats what I'm thinking too.. plus if the poly gives a tighter feel but only last half the amount of time, then funds might be better next time around

Vehicles typically employ both hydraulic shock absorbers and springs or torsion bars. In this combination, "shock absorber" refers specifically to the hydraulic piston that absorbs and dissipates vibration.

As far as I've always been concerned, a Shock Absorber can also be called a damper. A torsion bar is always a torsion bar.

Not quite sure if the Roughtrax ones come with shells although their pic shows them, so make sure you check.

Yes they do, same as the milners ones, Milners work out about £30 cheaper, but people are telling me to avoid them as they aren't as good. as the r/trax ones

Slowly getting down to the bottom of this rattle.. Costing a fortune mind..
