  • Need Help

We have an issue with a Hilux at work. It's a late model (06) Hilux D4D SR5. Don't know if any body else has one but they must be more common in the UK, than here. Basically, I'm getting a P1251 fault code from it, saying the turbo stepper motor circuit is faulty. Toyota will only sell a complete Turbo ($12000) and our local Bosch Diesel specialist says they can't be stripped, so Tony or Al, have you come across these before. It's going to be difficult to tell the customer, his 5 year old 100,000 km (60,000M) truck needs a new turbo!!!

The replacement part was sourced on-line for £180. A lot cheaper than the replacement turbo charger that Toyota wanted to fit to 'fix' the problem. Hope this might be of some assistance to anyone with a similar problem."

Cheers for this but that is for the 2.2 engine and the layout is different. On a 3.0 SR5 D4D, the EGR system is on the inlet side and nowhere near the turbo stepper motor......

I was going to say are you sure its the Turbo not the EGR.

Nearly every 'new' diesel car I've worked has rediculous amounts of oily soot blocking the intake from the EGR, most recently a 2005 Land Cruiser and a 2004 Merc E class that where both choked up.

The whole EGR concept on a diesel is completely flawed in my mind. The exhaust is far too sooty.

EGR's clean.....already done that. The problem is, it's intermittent, so until it does it on us, we're struggling to diagnose......gives me another car to run in the meantime!! Maybe the whole inlet needs removing and cleaning......

Our local Toyota dealer has already had this truck in and diagnosed the turbo but it won't be the first time they've said one thing and turns out to be another, the guy's struggling with the cost of the turbo, $15,000 fitted, from Toyota (half it for pounds)

No, breakers here won't remove anything from an engine, you have to buy the whole unit!.....We'll have to find a 'donor' to swap bits from !!

That price is pretty wild! I've been replacing an engine in a 2005 3.0 D4D Colorado and Toyota quoted £6,000 for a complete motor (minus ancileries), and 'only' £7-9K to dealer fit a new D4D engine according to Cruiser forums over here.

I thought the cost of living in the UK was out of control!

You have no idea how bad the cost of anything vehicle related is until you turn up here!!

I'm looking to buy the wife a 159 Alfa, I can buy one in the UK for between 4 or 5 grand.....can't find one here for less than $25,000. That's 12 to 14 grand in real money!! Car spares just blow the mind with price!!!
