  • Sorry rear window stuck no click etc

Hi there, my name is rich, I'm new to the forum, although I've been looking through the forum for a few months working out how to fix various bits and I've found it really helpful.

I've come up against a bit of a problem with my tailgate window, it's stuck closed and won't move, I've tried the window lock button several times and operating the rear window wiper, but it won't budge.

The window has never worked very well, it's always be slow going up and sometimes stuck about 2" from being closed but only when it was in a bad mood, which wasn't often in fairness to the old girl. I took the motor off today and hooked it up to the battery and it worked fine so obviously that isn't the problem, also I can't hear any clicking noises from the back when I operate the swicth.

I've searched though a lot of threads today and various other sites and I can't really find a definitive answer, probably because there isn't one, from what I've read I'm guessing it's either a wiring fault or a relay problem, but I really don't know much about electronics, so hopefully one of you guy could give me some advice or maybe someone else has had the same problem, it's starting to get on my wires so to speak. Anyway many thanks in advance, great site by the way.

    Cheers

All you can do is take it apart to check the motor, then take it from there.

The runners on the bottom will be rusted to hell if original.

It really could be anything but the relay control box is most likely, if you have the motor working independently. The relay box is on the passenger side, behind the back light but accessed when you remove the rear internal quarter panel. Mine played up the other week, all I did was smack the side of the truck, behind the back light and the thing burst back to life. New control box is sat in the glove box awaiting fitment. Get a mate to operate the switch and the key switch and check through the wiring at the control box.
      Don't hit it too hard!!

        Update

Thanks for the replies lads, climbed in the back this morning and pulled out the rear passenger side plastic panel, to get at the relay box. Gave the wiring loom coming out of bottom of box a wiggle and low and behold it started working, did it again stopped working, so anyway I've got it working again until I go over a Big bump.

Looks like a loose wire or contact of some description, it's looks like someone has been in there before me, there is a few snipped wires and a lot of insulating tape, same at the switch end. There is nothing obvious That i can see and I'm not entirely comfortable pulling the loom apart to find the prob so I'll check where the new splices are and if that fails I'll have to take it to the auto sparky round the corner. At least I know where the problem is now.

        Many thanks

In all cases it's well worth servicing your window mech.

Remove and open window motor check rubber damper (if broken botch repair is around), clean and regrease.

clean and regrease gear teeth and contact areas.

Check runner on window base, change if rusty (cheap).

Ensure contacts in shut mechanism are clean and WD40ed.

            All sorted

Pulled the loom apart and found the loose connection, the down wire had been spliced and wrapped in tape obviously not well enough, looks to me like the relay box has been bypassed several wires sniped and the 2 wires going to the motor have been spliced in, not sure what's gone on but I can operate the window with the tailgate down without having to knock the latches over.

So next job is to do as suggested and service the mech, is it a fairly easy job to get out and back in ? Any pitfalls or tips I should know about ?

I know my runners are well rusted and I had planned changing them, is roughtrax the only place that stock these or is there somewhere a little cheaper?

Also does anyone think that the reason my key switch for the tailgate window is not working, is because the relay has been bypassed ?

            Cheers

Runners are cheap just have lots of spray silicone grease and a variety of wide old screwdrivers to work of the rusted runners. Only Toyota/RT afaik.

Quite often its just dirty contacts on the rear of the switch or failing that the loom where it folds as the tailgate closes might be broken.
