  • bad brakes - update

thanks for advice on my bad brakes following caliper change.
Bled all brakes again tonight, using gravity bleed technique and bleed kit,
I couldnt manage to bleed the load sensing valve, the bleed nipple was too corroded and I didnt want to risk snapping it.

brakes are better than they were last night, same as before the new calipers. I still think they should be stronger.

That long arm on the load sensing valve was seized at the end where it joins valve, I relesaed that. But it is still seized at the wheel-thing (No.2 shackle!) at other end, the part mounted to a metal bar (no.1 shackle) moves, but not the near-right no.2 shackle.

    Hi Andy,

Could be you've still got air trapped within the LSPV as it sits higher than the rear cylinders. Might be worth letting a garage have a look as some of them have pressure bleeders that will do all four wheel cylinders at once by forcing the fluid through the lines, without having to pump the pedal. That would probably clear it.

I know the brakes on mine are good, at least at slowish speeds, when I didn't see someone coming onto a roundabout I was approaching as well. As for most other times, I try to remember I've got about 2 ton of metal around me and try to slow down earlier than I would in my old Volvo.

About the corroded and stuck nipple: I suppose WD40 wouldnt be a great idea at the risk of contaminating the brake fluid but how bout a quick brush of a wire brush then wetting it up overnite with brake fluid from the bottle. Then try it with a good quality spanner

      i.e. not DRAPER
that Draper stuff pi$$es me off its $hite

Try a Gunson's pressure bleeder (Eezibleed), cheap and very effective. It will get all the air out of your system if present, including the lspv.

that eezibleed looks like a good peice of kit, I will have to get hold of one.
When using it, would you still have to open the bleed nipple on the lspv?

Well.... Ideally yes, but there's a very good chance it should be able to push the air past the valve so that you can bleed it thru one of the rears. Just make sure you let enough fluid flow thru the rears to ensure that any air in the valve has had time to reach them.
I have successfully bled several cars over the years which had lsv's, I never had to bleed the lsv itself.
I'm on my second eezibleed (eventually drove over the first one) and have been using em for about 10 years now, never let me down, great piece of kit alright.
Don't forget to continually recheck the fluid level in eezibleed or you could quickly be back to square one tho, with a system full of air!

The Gunson Ezibleed does not come with an adaptor for Toyota master cylinders so you would have to find a spare top for the master cylinder and make an adaptor out of it yourself.

I haven't used it on my Surf yet, so didn't realise this, but with my first one they had a leaflet enclosed which offered to exchange one of the supplied caps for another from their range in case those supplied did not match your vehicle. Not sure if they still offer this as second time round I diddn't bother to read the bumf that came with it. Try emailing them to find out, perhaps when ordering direct you can get them to make a substitution before sending it?
Otherwise as Elvz says you'll have to make your own, usually no problem there, done it often, just get a cap to fit from another toyota (bring yours to check fit of course) in the breakers. Drill a hole in it to accept the hose, fit hose and you're away.
