  • Rear window...again !

A lady friend of mine has a nice '92 HiLux import. Her problem, for some time, has been that she is unable to use the rear as the window won't work.

You can hear the motor running...in both directions and taking off the interior trim you can feel it turning so I guess the wiring is ok. The switch in the front works the same.

As we can't open the window, I am having to work from inside. I guess a choice of faults may exist, 1. Thje motor is not turning it's worm gear to move the toothed quadrant or 2. The teeth of the quadrant may be stripped at the point where the motor sits. I think the next thing to do is to remove the motor, plug it in and see if it's moving it's little gear against load and at the same time check the quadrant teeth and lube all the channels and various moving parts. I assume that when the motor is removed then the quadrant will be free to turn and move the glass.

I noticed, when swinging the spare wheel back, that there is a plastic panel in the tailgate where the number plate would be on other models. Is this removable and if so, would it make the job easier ? It's not comfortable trying to get a hand behind the motor and regulator to undo things. Especially at my age ! I've read all the forum posts on the subject with interest and I now have a good vision of what happens in there.

I do have 30odd years experience with vehicle mechanics but mot with this particular problem..The bulk of my work involved diagnosis and breakdowns

Any hnts and tips for motor removal woulf be appreciated.

    Rear tailgate

    Ed,how do.
You can get the tailgate open but it is time consuming. It sounds like the cog in the motor has parted company from the bit that turns the window.Technical term that was.
Before you do this job obtain a new motor,or one from a breaker, the ones from the passenger side of Surfs will fit,or even a Corolla should do(make sure its the same motor first). If you are stuck I have one knocking about you could borrow.
Drop the back seats down, climb in and remove the carpet from the rear door, about 10 push fit clips.
There is then a shaped metal support thingy (allows you to sit on carpet bit when door open and also protects door innards.Five screws (I think its 5)and the metal can be removed.
Then you have the plastic liner, this helps to keep the weather out, carefully remove this and you will see the motor to the side, your right side as you are looking at it.
Find a spot where the two cogs that lower the glass are accessable, make sure that there is no obstructions behind the cogs and drill a small hole through the two so that you can insert a small screwdriver between them. This should hold the glass in place while you remove the motor. Its a ball ache to get at,there are three small screws at the rear of the motor, some even utilise torx heads, you just have to get your hand in there and sort it.When the motor is out you then have the option of removing the small screwdriver(a self tapper can be used if the vehicle is to be driven)and lowering the window, beware it is heavy, opening the door and then sorting it out in comfort. Its not that easy even with the door open
I actually did mine with the door and glass in the closed position,it got a bit warm in the back( it was summer).Fitting is sort of a reversal of the above, you can try it without shutting the door, just click over (another technical term)the "cogs"either side of door, two clicks each and the window can be raised or lowered, use the door handle to "open" the door and all will return to normal.
