  • CV Boots and Bronze Bushes

    Hi all,

    I'm replacing the CV boots on my KZN130 soon and I'm wondering if it's worth doing the bronze bushes while I've got it all apart as I've had a squealing noise for a while now.

    Also, I have tried to find a write up for the bronze bush replacement, but the links in the threads I've found haven't worked. Can anyone supply a link that works please?

    Once you've got the hubs off, you just need a long drift or punch to knock the bushings out. The new bushings just press or knock in up to their shoulders. Put the bushes in the freezer overnight and take them out when you're ready to fit them, they'll go in easier.

          I usually order new snap rigs too. It's easier to find the new ones, in their wee bags, than it is to try to figure out how far and in which direction the old ones went.

              There's a paper gasket on the cover with the 8 bolts in it, but it's usually OK and easy enough to repair if you break it.

                    Not sure,but isnt there a dustseal of some type(dust deflector according to Haynes) between the inner bronze bush and the cv joint,about 4in in diameter,fixes to the rear of the steering knuckle.Might be advantageous to do it at the same time

                      I think thats the one thats fitted to the brake disc shield.
                      But yeah, the hub needs to be off to fit it in any case.

                        Bronze bushes and dust seals

                        Vince,how do.
                        When I was a lot younger and people drove Anglias and Cortinas it was the norm to soak phosfor bronze bushes in oil overnight,the same for things like the oil seals at the ends of gearboxs and diffs.It was said to prolong their life.
                        Would it be worth doing it with the above bits,or are bushes and such made "better" these days.Have not done this type of job for years so I just thought I would proffer a point of view,what do you reckon ??,Regards,Alan

                            So is this a necessary part to change? I'm on a budget and just wanted to do important parts...

                            Also interested on hearing about the 'soaking' parts issue...

                              Bronze bushes and dust seals

                              Been doing mine today.Been to Milners in Darley Dale,their bronze bushes and dust seals are about £33+vat,whereas Roughtrax retail at around £48 +vat,But check before you buy.
                              The nice man at Milners said Toyota were over engineered so to be fair I would only replace if the original if damaged,give it a really good clean and if ok,use it
                              Just had a root in my box of bits in the garage,found one of the bushs for my Morris Minor.There is a bronze bearing that fits in the middle of the flywheel,the first motion shaft from the gearbox is a snug fit into it,Haynes suggest soaking it in oil,but to be fair the bronze does not look as solid or heavy as the ones from Milners for the surf,but just to be on the safe side I did soak mine overnight in oil,banged them in using a lump of wood as a drift,bit of moly grease before assembly and all should be ok.As someone else mentioned,have a spare snap ring to hand just in case yours goes walkabout.Whilst doing the nearside I noticed that the upper balljoint had a torn gaiter,hence trip to milners.The new ball joints dont come with studs,or are even threaded now, so I had to go and get some stainless bolts and nylok nuts,and a longer grease nipple for easier access.Just need to let the cuts and hammer rash heal and I will be ok.Truck doesnt seem to wander quite as much and is a lot quieter,almost rattle free at the front,fit the free wheel hubs tomorrow,jobs a good one.
