  • my 3.0 td engine check light nightmare

hi i have a 3.0td surf and was running it on fully cleaned and filtered bio diesel for approx six months, then whilst driving it lost power and engine check light came on, it still starts drives fine but wont go over 3000 rpm or 40 mph. There is no smoke of any colour when driving, but when throtle is held for about 10 sec at 1500-2000 in park it runs lumpy and white smoke comes out of exhaust, but not when driving. Here is a list of things ive tried to solve this. The day the fault started it ran out of fuel but topped up and it started fine and i drove about 20 miles before fault came on.

Drained fuel, blown lines back to tank, new fuel filter, cleaned little filter on pump (allthough it wasnt dirty at all) and filled with fresh white derv.

tried running from a fuel can under bonnet but still ran the same

done the paper clip diagnostic test and i get as follows 1 1111 1 1111 1 1111 and so on with over drive light flashing so i guess this is fault code 14? is this correct?

disconnected batteries overnight but still the same fault

it runs the same on bio as it does on white derv with no difference

tried running without hand primer but still the same

new fuel pipes from steel ones up to primer and pump and primer works fine

cracked all injectors whilst ticking over and engine revs drop on every one when opened.

If someone could help or have any suggestions then i would be very gratefull as im new to surf ownership and its a great motor but this isnt helping at all

Where in UK are you? You might be better getting TonyN or one of the experts to look at it.

Code 14 suggests Timer Control Valve or ECU problem but check the timing belt first.

Check the condition of the belt and the that all timing marks are aligned. Should be info on here about the timing. If not then download the 1KZ-TE engine manual. Do you know when the timing belt was last changed. If not then replace it.

                Links to manual.

If you've done everything else then it must be the timer control valve, seeing as thats what the ECU is telling you its not happy with...

Its on the bottom of the pump, facing backward, not sure if you can change it without removing the pump, not tried before. I'd try that next, the only other thing to try is to see if someone will lend you a good ECU to make sure it nots that thats giving duff signals.

cant find any pipes off so timer control valve is next, does any one have one forsale and do the 2.4 models have the same part?

I'm sure I cured a TCV problem by changing the TPS, have you checked that?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's
