  • clutch or gear box problem?

    Hi fellow surfers.

I have recently changed my clutch slave cylinder as it was leaking fluid and the clutch pedal was sticking to the floor and not releasing making gear change impossible. After changing it and bleeding the clutch I put it all back together and thought everything would be fine but it is not it is still the same only getting worse and it is now falling out of 1st gear every so often causing the truck to abruptly stop with a clunk. I thought I might have left some air in the pipe so bled it again but their was no trapped air. I did swap one of the break lines over without bleeding it would that be a reason for concern.
Im automatically thinking the clutch or even the gear box is on its way out because it sometimes falls out of 1st when going slow mostly just pulling off. the clutch pedal also seems to be at its worst when you are pulling off or reversing when you have to ease off the pedal slowly.

I hope some one has a good idea what is wrong.

    Thanks

You swapped a brake line and didn't bleed the brakes? Holy fcuk!!!
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Notwithstanding your stupidity regarding the brakes, the clutch sounds like it's knackered as does the gearbox.

Given that you have no brakes, it's probably a good thing that you can't move it...

Without taking offence with your lack of respect for others, car moves and drives fine, car stopes fine, brakes fine clutch pedal does not release occasionaly.please read thread properly before posting a shit and worthless response. and i was just checking as the work was done elswhere. but not naming names as simple mistake if that actually is the problem which i doubt as like i said it was happening before the brake line was fitted

When you changed the brake line did you bleed the brakes?

          You Said:

When you said "it" do you mean the clutch or the brakes?

OK OK OK. the breaks as far as im aware were not bled im no mechanic a send my truck to a forum member who does all the work hence why i am not naming names as it probably skipped his mind as he had a lot of other work to do . i said ' i ' changed breaks because it would have been a lot quicker than to write a full essay im sure you understand

and by it i ment brakes

            Thankyou

It'll be the plastic bush at the base of the gear lever Rhys, common problem on the manual Surfs/Runners.

Should only cost a couple of quid.

I wasn't having a go, I was just trying to understand what you meant

I'm sure the brakes were bled or the only way you would be stopping is when you hit something!

I'm going to agree with Albannach I think you have a problem with both your clutch and gearbox - there is nothing in the gearbox which will make your clutch stick and if there is a problem with your clutch it still shouldn't be Jumping out of gear.

I'm not going to argue with you Professor because you know a lot more than me but how would that make the clutch stick?

It wouldn't, I guess there must be a return spring missing or broken on the clutch pedal assembly?

ahhh! At least that could be a cheap(ish) fix then - new clutch and some bushes - better than a new gearbox anyway

I did read the post (not thread) properly, you clearly said that YOU had replaced a brake pipe without bleeding it. That is dangerously stupid. Nowhere in your first post did you mention that you'd taken the truck to Vince to have it repaired.

From your description of the clutch fault, my diagnosis is that the clutch is worn beyond its usable limits. From your description of the gearbox fault, my diagnosis is that it's knackered.

Respect is not a given, it has to be earned.
