  • Turbo Light

    hi all;
i have a problem with the turbo. Sometimes when i start the engine green turbo light comes on. Or while i am driving the surf when i release the gas pedal, turbo light still on. At that moments when i press on the gas pedal, a lot of smoke thrown out from the exhaust. Sometimes it is straightened when this smoke is thrown out, but sometimes it is not. Green ight still on.

And also i would like to learn if surf has the low fuel warning light. Because one of my friend has '92 toyota corolla and that car hasnt got low fuel warning light. Its dashboard is very similar to the surfs dashboard.

    Thank You

    hi,

I cannot help on the Turbo light issue as I have the 3.0 litre which does not have the light, but I can confirm that the surf does have a low fuel light, it's a small orange upright recatangle attached to the left hand side of the fuel gauge.

Trev, I've never yet got down so far as to have the low fuel light come on but any idea how much is left when it does light?

It should come on with about 10 litres left. If you wait for it to come on, then fill up, you should get around 55 litres in. Capacity is 65.

          hi again.
Today i went to mechanic to solve my turbo problem. Mechanic test my turbo and said that turbo doesnt have any problem. It works fine. But sometimes the turbo light is still on when i take my foot form the gas pedal. We couldnt solve it out.
I told him that when turbo light is still on, i press the gas pedal, and a lot of smoke is thrown out. after that when i take my foot off then turbo light light turns off.
He couldnt understand why the light is still on, but he told me that turbo works fine. but Smoke is caused not from turbo, but from fuel injectors. He told me that there are 4 injectors and they should be replaced.
i dont know what i should do.
          Could you please help me?

Sounds like somthing with the turbo pressure sensor or a blockage in the vacuum pipes causing the turbo to keep spinning or keeping putting pressure out on the overrun. You will get a bit of a delay when you take your foot off the gas because the turbo will still be spinning and therfore putting out pressure, however it won't be for longer than 1/2 to 1 second before it spools down.

Smoke can be caused by the injectors, fuel timing, turbo not boosting correctly, a hole in the exhaust manifold, and numerous other things. The smoke is basically unburnt or only partly fuel being pushed out of the exhaust. Whatever is causing the turbo problems could also be causing the engine to not burn the fuel enough. I would find the cause of the turbo problem and it may answer the other.

However you might want to run some injector cleaner like redex through the system which may solve the smoke if it is just dirty injectors.

            Hope that this helps

              Hi Guys
My brothers surf is exactly the same.... dont think it smokes though, when he presses the throttle the turbo light comes on, when he takes his foot off the throttle it goes off. Even trying to maintain 60 mph the light would stay on aslong as his foot was pressing the throttle.
He just got it back today from the garage, brand new head fitted under warranty, running good, temp guage sits fine but radiator top very hot??? Is this normal????
Also.. drive shaft boot split, wheres best to get parts or does anything else have the same boot?
              Thanks

yours sounds like a differnent prob check your near side wing and look for a small electric control module a lot of probs with 2.4 turbo is that there is a small vacume pipe that falls of and stops turbo boosting
                  I,LL GO FIRST NO PROB

Nothing wrong with that, as long as its the green light, it shows the turbo is up to pressure.

The rad will be hot, that what it does! its to hot to touch for long normally

Milner or Roughtrax or Toyota Dealer, take your pick.

5.5-7.3 psi @ 2,200-2,400rpm for 2.4's not sure about the 3.0, not in the book.
