  • Brake Squeel

    Hi everyone =)

Im new to the 4WD world and after talking with a lot of people i have bought a Hilux Surf (1989 turbo diesel 2.4)

It runs well but has a terrible brake squeek coming from the rear.
It constantly squeeks except when i actually use the brakes and is giving me a headache! (literally)

I had a look underneath to see what i could see but alas! i know nothing of 4WD braking systems everything was enclosed!

The fellow i bought it from said the reason for squeeking was that the calipers weren't opening all the way when released so he put some grease on them and said it'l be fine.

But its very annoying/ embarrassing and making my driving a misery.

Can someone help me with some ideas or ways to fix this?

    Much appreciated!!!!!!!

    Chris, Queenstown - New Zealand.

If you havn't had discs fitted like Nigel said, have you actually taken the drums off to see whats happening?

Sqealing noises normally mean your shoes/pads are worn out, or are really cheap ones that sqeal.

Ok, thanks guys ill have to let a mechanic have a look at it then, as i have changed countries and dont have any tools here yet.

Im not sure if it has had a conversion or not but i cant see any brakes as behind the wheel is all enclosed... not sure what that means???

Also, while i was having a look down there it seems the rear diff is leaking a little bit of oil (i assume thats the rear diff - the mount in the centre that goes to the 2 back wheels) - is that a mojor problem?

        Regards,
        Chris

Took it for a drive today and got the 4WD action working, handles very nice indeed

Then after work i tried to start it - no go.
After inspecting under bonnet i noticed the earth cable had split and ripped off !

The battery isn't tied down and after my jolting around today it must have ripped it in 2.

Just thought id add that in to my list of troubles...

Just get someone to check the brakes pretty quick.
