  • Newbie needs help.....

Firstly hello to everyone out there, I'm so glad that there is places like this dedicated to all things off rd
I am reasonably new at this off road game but from what I have seen so far it is going to be a blast!!
I am the proud owner of a 1987 ln61 surf, it is powered by a 2.4 2lt which apparently was lifted out of a 1987 prado? It stands tall and proud with a 2 inch body and 2 inch suspension lift with a set of 33 x 12.5 mongrels tucked underneath.
When I acquired the truck it's engine was sad and smokey so I bought a 2.4 that had been lifted out of said prado and proceeded to do an engine swap.
Having spun spanners underneath buses for a number of years there isn't really much on a vehicle that I won't give a go. And generally there is nothing but positive results after a bit of hard yakka and alot of thought, planning and execution.
So I thought best thing to do here is down load the manual and rip into it. Well it turns out that I had to swap alot of gear over from my old motor and in the process discovered that what I have is 2 different series motors and parts interchanging wasn't as easy as I first thought.
This is one job that has been hard from the start and is proving rather frustrating, I thought I was so close but I am currently feeling like it is 2 steps forward and one back. Therefore I am even more dedicated in seeing it through to the end and getting the usual positive results I am used to
I am currently having oil pressure issues and it not really the type that you would expect, has anyone ever seen one of these motors manage to pop an oil filter at the seams ??

I've only ever seen one oil filter burst. It was very old, very rusty and very choked.

If you're bursting new, quality, filters, the only thing I can think of is that the relief valve (ball and spring) in the oil pump is stuck closed. But even then, I doubt the pump could reach high enough pressures to burst a metal filter?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

What brand of oil filter was it? Check il pressure with a proper gauge to determine if high oil pressure is a problem.

Why was your replacement engine taken out the prado in the first place?
Could it of been that there was a problem already with that engine before you got it?

has it done it to more than one filter? Only seen it happen to a filter that wasn't put together properly. Like said above, you'd have to go some to burst a filter. You need to get a gauge on it if it does it again.

there 2 very different 2L motors, early ones have the cam working rockers in the head, later ones are OHC, and quiet different apart from basic block. Normally first gens get the older type. OHC motor first appeared in the 89 on 2nd Gens.

              hmmmmmm

Thanks guys, I have so far managed to pop 5 filters of the best quality available in Nz. I have a bit of inside info on them as I work for a company that sells them and we have people with many many years experience in the filtration market who are completely amazed that I have managed to pop oil filters at all. As mentioned above no one at work thought it even possible with the pressure an oil pump creates.
Interesting how someone mentions the "oil pump regulating valve" so far I have been unable to locate it, I realise it should be a big hex bolt on the injector pump side of the oil pump housing, but it just is not there on my new engine.
As for why was it removed from the prado? simple....... gutless and the fella that owns the prado put a 3l in it with a turbo hung on the side when he removed the 2lt, he assures me it was a mint runner with no hassles and I have since been in touch with him to discuss this.
