  • Engine rebuild

    Hi everyone

I have a 92 LN130 2.4. The body work and interior are in excellent condition but the engine has now done 240,000km and is in need of some work.

What I need is some advice from you more experienced Surf owners.

    Current state of engine:
The top end is quite tappety
Small oil leak from rear/top of engine (possibly head gasket)
It uses a small amount of coolant and oil (due to leak)
Very difficult to start in current cold weather (new glow plugs last winter)
When cold it pulls away like a slug and it seems generally lacking any power
Smokes an embarrassing amount when I put my foot down

About 6 months ago I had the injector pump reconditioned due to a bad fuel leak and I also had the injectors overhauled hoping it would stop the smoking, it didn't.

    Options:
    1) Install a used low mileage engine
    2) get my current engine recoditioned
    3) Get the head rebuilt, replace head gasket (no blue smoke so bottom OK)
    4) Buy and install a reconditioned 2nd gen engine

Will a 2nd gen engine fit into my surf with all my existing ancilliaries?
I have seen engineering oufits advertising (on ebay) recon 2nd gen 2.4s fitted for around £1200.

Any recommendations/advice would be greatly appreciated

    Hello

Your car *is* a 2nd gen, therefore a 2.4 from A N other truck will fit. I dont know whether you have a mechanical or electronic pump though, or whether it makes a difference to the ancilliaries.

It would be worth giving Stormforce or one of the other breakers a shout for a replacement engine to keep costs down, as I imagine the rest of the truck is pretty tired by now. Its not worth spending a grand cos you can get working 2.4 trucks for less than that now.

    Good luck!

      Current state of engine:
The top end is quite tappety Use a higher viscosity mineral oil.
Small oil leak from rear/top of engine (possibly head gasket) It'll be the valve cover gasket.
It uses a small amount of coolant and oil (due to leak) Radiator weeping along the top seam?
Very difficult to start in current cold weather (new glow plugs last winter)
When cold it pulls away like a slug and it seems generally lacking any power This'll be due to the transmission fluid being cold and thick.
Smokes an embarrassing amount when I put my foot down New air fliter or turbo seals leaking.

I refrained from answering 'generally lacking in power' with "its a 2.4"

          Thanks guys
I'll try what BUSHWACKER suggested first and go from there

As for *it's a 2.4*, I had one of the early 2.4 non turbo pickups, now that's what you call power

Would converting it to a 3.0 be too big a job

Hi pft, probly cheaper to flog it on ebay as is and buy another 3.0L for the cost and hassle of changing engines.

Don't forget to tell everyone its indestructable as seen on top gear.......

Yeah, different loom / ECU etc as well as the faff of swapping the engine itself.

2nd gen 3.0s are available for a grand up now, and there's even some 3rd gens for two grand kicking around!
