  • 1995 Hilux surf not starting

Picked up a 95 3ltr surf about 2 months ago and am really enjoying it.
However about 30% of the time I have a problem starting it. Unlock car, and turn key. All lights come on, including coil which quickly turns off. Then when i turn the key to ignition I get a click. Normally by turning key 3 or 4 times the beast will finally fire up. Wondering if the starter motor is about to pack up. There seems to be plenty of charge on the batteries. Does anyone have a more informed view?

Also which is the best manual to purchase about the car.

    Thanks,

Sounds like the starter solenoid issue - easy enough to sort out.

It would also be worth checking the earth points / contacts and battery terminals, clean and treat if needed.

definitely the starter, get the refurb kit from roughtrax, once you get the starter out its a ten minute job, getting the starter out is the fun part so I'll not dampen your enthusiasm at this point. H

Deffo the starter needs a refurb.Go to www.roughtrax4x4.com to get the refurb kit.

The following is just routine maintenance especially for the winter.
When your sorting the starter it will be a good idea to check your earth leads aswell just to make sure they are all ok and clean them up.Disconnect the batteries and give the terminals a bloomin good clean up and just give everything a good checking over.
When you switch the ignition on and the glowplug light goes out wait for a further 10 seconds and if you listen you will hear a relay click which is the glowplug relay turning off. This is when you want to start the engine as this is when the plugs are up to temp to fire the engine
