  • Steel Seal for cracked head....

    Hi all,

I was in a local Merc / BMW specialist garage the other daqy, and spotted a bottle of 'steel seal' on the side...

    http://www.steelseal.co.uk/index.asp...CT&productid=1

I read the blurb on the bottle and it suggests it will repair head and gasket problems - and is guaranteed.

I asked the garage who said they had not used it but were about to, on a works vaqn that had blown a gasket... They said if successful, they would be using it IF REQUESTED to, as its far cheaper than a new head or gasket.

Anyone here tried it? Sadly i've already done the head on mine (well... its in place but not all connected up yet) so I cant try it out myself.

Would be interested in knowing what results it gives in the real world.

The problem with these things is that they make no distinction between leaks and small/furred up water ways. Rarely a long term solution.

It,ll give you enough time to flog your car on ebay to some poor soul who will have to do the head/gasket a few weeks/ months later, only to find that his problems are not over quite yet as the "snake oil" has blocked up a few waterways somewhere, possibly hardened some seals, /O rings.
I believe someone on here, some time back, used it, but in full recognition that it was only ever going to be temporary and until he collected the tokens for a new head.
Id steer clear and Im sure most will say the same.

        well.... maybe

if you read the info, they say exactly the opposite. The 'mend' is a chemical reaction catalysed by high temperature - the kind you find in the region of a head/gasket. It specifically says there are no particulates to clog pipes etc.
I agree that the unscrupulous may use it to flog a dead head, but that kind will always find a way round a problem liek that.

what I wondered is... anyone here tried it?

        obviously not!

i would have given it a shot had the head not been removed before i saw the stuff. just out of curiosity. which is OK as im not a cat.

You could always ask TonyN if he would use it.

I personally havent used it but a mate has and it lasted for around 18mths and then he was back to square 1. As a long term fix i wouldnt recommend your proberly off doing it properly unless your selling it to some poor guy, which is abit harsh.

i agree (and no I wouldnt do the dirty!) - but a good fix for a vehicle you might otherwise scrap, as many do with dead-head. even if it lasts an extra year.

I used this type of stuff on my old 2.4 - lasted a couple weeks and then went again. In the end you're got to bite the bullet and get the head off.....

I used a similar product on an old 1.0L Pug 205 with a leaky head gasket. The car was only worth £200 to me so not worth doing the work, but I needed it to last a while longer.

It lasted ME a year with no further water loss. I sold it on for £200 to someone I used to work with who knew the background, and it is STILL going now, over 7 years later!!

I'm sure thats the exception rather than the rule, and the 1.0 Peugeot engine is hardly high tech so would probably keep going even if in flames, but not bad for a cheap bottle of snake oil!
