  • European chassis number

Hi all, quick question; I want to get my 3rd gen onto Spanish plates but to do it I need a European chassis number. They don't seem to be in any hurry to sort it out so I would like to try and sort it myself. Any ideas please?

Well I dont have a clue what you are on about, but here goes anway.

The chassis number is on your V5 and its in proper numbers and letters like we use in Europe and not in Japanese characters.

Its also on the VIN plate under the bonnet

Its also also stamped into the chassis rail behind the O/S front wheel

I dont suppose this helps you as Im sure you must have been aware of some of this ( at least the V5 bit), but maybe someone who knows what a European chassis number consists of and where it comes from will pop in.
I,ll be interested to hear the outcome of all this as I had always thought a chassis number was something you only got one of and it applied wherever in the world you happened to take your vehicle.

Thanks Bogus, but from what I'm hearing the European number has more digits than the jap or uk ones.

VIN and Chassis numbers are not the same. Not down here anyway. The Surfs have a VIN number but when they got imported here an extra letter is added.

            Importing into Spain

Hi from near Malaga, whereabouts are you?
The chassis number they use in Spain includes the model no.
So if you have a 3rd gen the chassis no. is KZN185 followed by your serial number, the total adds up to 13 characters, just add 0's to the front of the serial number till you get to the right total. (KZN1850099999)
I imported my surf 3 years ago and you have to jump through plenty of hoops and spend a lot of time running around till you get Spanish plates.
You need a gestor who specialises in importing vehicles, by the time you get the plates you will have spent approx 900 euro, any questions just ask
