  • Freewheeling Hubs:Do they save much fuel?

I have fitted AVN hubs to Landrovers iin the past to save fuel and wear and tear. I would be interested to hear opinions on the poterntial and actual benefits of fitting them to a 93 KZN 130 Diesel. Has anybody actually got improved fuel consumption? If so how much? I drive a mixed cycle of town and motorway and anything that improves on 20 MPG would be welcome. I'm not heavy footed and I try and keep it rolling at junctions but it is quite thirsty.

I havent really seen any improvement in economy, but it certainly saves the cv gaiters.

Compared to the air resistance of a front end with the drag coefficient of a brick I wouldn't imagine that decoupling the front drive shafts would make any noticeable difference in MPG...but it will save wear on the CV joints (which is why I have fitted manual hubs).

I agree with whats been said, the real benefit is for lifted trucks running steeper angles on the CV's but even standard trucks would gain from the driveshafts not turning.

in theory they should, but like others said its probably not that noticeable, they are better as a wear reducing measure for the CV's, diff and hub bushes.

            Hi guys,

Fitted some AVM FWH a while ago now, and the MPG
has gone from 21MPG up to 24MPG and, I have not
changed my driving style, so I say yes.

            Gman.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.
