  • New Surf Owner - Edinburgh

    Hi

Bought a 1993 Surf a month ago. Been browsing this and the other forums and just signed up. It is burgundy, supposed to have been imported in 2004, has 214,000 km on it now. Paint laquer is gone in patches on the roof but is good everywhere else. Cloth interior, its ssrx I think.

Good points - chassis and bodywork seem good, electrics all work, new exhaust, newish radiator and water pump.

Not so good - doesn't start straight off (takes five or six revolutions of starter motor for engine to fire and catch)
very slight oil leak from drive shaft where it has that joint with the plastic guard cover that looks like a claw (poor description I know)

leaking fuel presumably from fuel pump. Tried on virgin veg oil 30% and then 50% which made it much worse.

Starting is much harder with more veg oil and can take a couple of attempts. once engine is warm it goes fine and even starts fine if stopped and allowed to cool for many hours. overnight however seems to be too long and then it is a pain.

It does appear to be coming out of the small round seal on top of the pump but I'm not convinced the ammount isnt too small from there for it to be leaking elsehwere.

Ive found a diesel engine speciallist in edinburgh who will service the pump for 350ish but cant find a garage interested in taking the pump out as it will tie up their left until the pump is fixed. Ive seen people on about using a new but slightly different pump and am wondering if this is viable and maybe a garage would be happy to just swap the pump.

There are loads of Surfs driving around edinburgh so Id be very interested to hear from anyone with similar experiences.

Thanks for reading and look forward to chatting to fellow surfers : )
