    afternoon all

    after some advice as usual.

I'm just about to fit an additional transmission cooler to the truck but had a niggling thought regarding the viscious fan.

If what I read is right, when the engine's cool the fan should be able to be spun by hand, although not whizz around and when the engine's hot it should be very stiff the turn by hand.

On mine it's easy to move by hand whether the engine is hot or not so I think the oil in the viscious hub has gone (the truck is 15 years old after all).

I've done a search and it looks like I can re-fill it.

My questions are what kind of fluid goes in, where can I get it from and do I just take it to bits or is there a fill hole

    anyone help????

    ta

its filled with silicone oil, you can get it direct from toyota or RC hobbiest supply.

i don't want to fill it with solid silicon or bolt it together in some way

Is it just a case of taking it off the truck, seperating the 2 halves and filling it up with this silicon oil (how much goes in) then crewing it back together and re-fitting it

      sorry to sound thick

From when I did mine I believe it's three bottles of the oil you can get from your Toyota dealer. Can't remember the amount in each but it may be something like 10 or 15 ml in each one. It doesn't need much.

Take it apart, clean the old oil out with petrol, re-fill with 50ml of silicone oil (I use 7000cSt from a model shop), rebuild.

Did you order from Toyota? I'm needing to do mine but theres a distinct lack of model shops locally, (20m) and after 8 manifold studs cost 34 quid from the toy dealer I would rather shop elsewhere. H

                  Nope

toyota dealer either didn't list it or if they did told me it's a specialist job and I should book the truck in so they could do it "properly".

Needless to say not an option for me so I ordered 100ml of 7000 cst oil from my local model shop (got detials from yell.com) £9.50 plus 99p delivery and it shuld be here tomorrow.

like you nearest model shop is not too handy but they were happy to do mail order

just one more question, how do I remove the hub from the pulley?????

                  hope this helps

Thanks for the heads up, actually found that site googling, think I'll go for the 5000 stuff, wonder what toyota use for UK LC's, or any Uk car. H

I think they use about 3000.

Remember to use half, don't put the full 100ml in.

It's only held on ith 4 bolts. The fan is held on to the coupling with 4 nuts and the coupling is held together with 6 cross headed screws. You'll need an impact driver to loosen and tighten these...

                            Chaps

lovely, thanks for the details about not putting too much oil in.

Overalls ready for delivery tomorrow then that and the aditional trans cooler going on and hopefully no more temp needle climbing towards the red when towing

in't it great when we can fix stuff ourselves -after it's done, I've got a good mind to drive round to the local Toyota dealer and show them a job done "properly" without having to sell a kidney to pay for it - rant over

                            thanks again chaps

Have a read of this page - but read it all. If you are not confused by the end of it, then you will be able to do all you need without any problems. I used the 10,000 cSt silicon purchased from Toyota in Australia and adjusted the cut-in temperature (about 3 years ago) and haven't had any problems with the clutch since then:
