  • Thought it was going too well..

Having run the truck for a week on water, today I filled it with Antifreeze (green from roughtrax) stopped 5 miles down the road, and there's coolant everywhere. Cant see where it's coming from, but the front of the block is wet from just below the air con pump, and the fan has blown it all over the place. I think it might be the water pump, but why didn't it leak on just water? I didn't disturb the pump while doing the head, so its not a bolt I missed...

Are you sure its not just a pin hole in the rad, mine was and the fan spread it all over the engine bay. Took me ###### ages to find the source!

        Hi mate

mine was a small hole in the rubber hose thats about 2 1/2" long just to the right of the thermostat housing.

I found it by putting an air hose up the expansion tank hose, remove the filler cap and put my hand over to make a seal and pumping some air in.

Stood out like the b4lls on a bulldog that way, especially as I thought I'd a hole in the rad too due to the pattern of spray.
And some that smile have in their hearts, I fear, millions of mischiefs

~Funny you should say that, I replaced that hose with a brand new one this morning.. It's about the only dry part of the engine...

Had another look tonight, and it looks like the water pump... Could it be because the fanbelts are actually at the right tension for the first time in years and putting a bit of pressure on the seal thats made it leak now? I 'm just looking for an excuse not to spend another 100 quid getting a new Water pump...

You say it seems to be coming from below the A/C pump?

Are the coolant hose/s to the turbo secure?

I think I'll pull the aircon pump off and have a look see before I splash out..

Just remove the front wheel and inspection plate under the wheel arch, the turbo can be inspected there.

I've just spent ages messing about with the engine, and didn't even notice there was a plate there...

Antifreeze wiil leak where water won't, my V8 used to leak with the correct amount of coolant, so I just put water in it.

                      LOL

Coolant pump isn't a bad job, there is also a coolant pipe going into the block that under-ish the a/c pump, you don't normally remove it to do the head, it goes round the turbo flange and into the two hoses by the brake servo.

Got in there with a brighter torch and it is almost definitely the water pump. New one is on its way..

It was raining.... Basically it's air con and bracket off to make some room, alternator and bracket off, timing belt and the plate behind it off, and there it is. Finished it about half nine last night, so couldn't see if there were any leaks... Old pump looks OK but all the gaskets were shabby, and the seal on the shaft was letting some through. also found a little oil leak where I didn't put the plate behind the timing belt on properly last time I was there....

Now, How do you spot a leak in the persistently pouring rain?
