  • Stuck In 4WD

    Hi
I was using my 93 SSRX (Auto) in a field in 4WD today, as I drove out on to the road I stopped and selected 2WD.The light didn't go out. I searched the forum and promptly started reversing and swinging the steering from lock to lock as suggested but to no avail. Can't hear a relay clicking but then I never could. Can't see any splits in any hoses but then I haven't looked very hard as it's throwing it down at the moment. Have driven home (about 5 miles) but probably wound the transmission up so I don't want to go any further.

    Any ideas please.

    Cheers

You will need to check all is OK with the ADD system. These links will give you something to start looking for the fault.

Find some gravel or some grass (neighbours lawn!) and nail the throttle, forwards and backwards in a straight line. Also try enagaging and disengaging 4WD whilst doing this. It should eventually sort itself out. Failing this, then start taking things apart!
We used to have 86 Jeep Wrangler and the 4WD was a complete bugger to get out of but it did eventually let go. It didn't get used very much which is probably why.

        Cheers Gang
I'm sure I'll be able to sort it out. My only concern is that if the transmission is wound up tight after having driven home, is there any way of unwinding it before I take it back on the road to find a suitable piece of grass to release the other bits?

it doesnt physically wind up like an elastic band. when in 4wd dont go over around 50mph main use is for loose surfaces where there is little traction. do not use full lock as this can cause damage. Try putting it in L box 4wd is automatically on do this when in neutral dirve up the road then stop but back into H drive forward stop press 4WD button drive off again slowly but not to slow, if no go reverse for around 10M, anything is worth a go

            Success!

Just a quick update. Having looked at all the advice given and all the info from a search of the site, I am back on the road again.

It was the solenoid that was faulty. To get back into 2WD I jacked up the front wheels to release any tension there may be. Removed the 'disengage 4WD' tube from the solenoid on the wheelarch, sucked the tube and low and behold the ADD released.

Thanks everyone (including those who didn't know they helped)
