  • Measuring Torsion Bar Accuracy

    Hi All,

    I'm gonna check and adjust me bars this week as I think one of the wishbones is dropping further than the other when jacked up on stands.

    Anyhow, after doing some searching etc. it seems that the 'ride height' is measured from the edge of the rim to the edge of the wheel arch, right?

    My wheel arches are after market ones and seem to be a bit wobbly and maybe not put on with the greatest of care.

    Hence they may not be the best place to measure from.

    Is there any other 'more accurate' method of measuring ride height and making sure both sides are equal?

    You best bet would be to take the arches off if they are that bad and go from the hub centre (then it doesn't matter about the wheels and tyres) to the underside of the wing.

      Had thought of that but I don't really want to go pulling bits off and then causing more problems.

      They are riveted on and look to be a bugger to remove!

        Measure from the ground to the bottom wishbone bolts ?

        Make sure you adjust them on a flat piece of ground - poured concrete should be good.

          from the rim of the wheel to the underside of the arch it should be about 13.5".
          The front end needs to be right off the ground when adjusting the t/bars and then lower down and take for a spin and measure again.Then adjust again if needed by following the above

            Dont the wishbones drop the the extension bump stops anyway when the truck's jacked up?

              Is this 'stock' height?

              My Surf is lifted by about 2 inches.

              I think it is an uprated spring and wind up torsion bar lift is I don't see any other lifting method.

              I suspect one of the torsion bars might be out of synch as the wishbone on the drivers side seems to be at a slightly sharper angle when it is hanging free.

              The torsion bars have been wound up to their limit I would guess to get that much angle on the wishbones.

              The car seems to be sitting level though, strange!

              I think I'm gonna have to lower it about an inch at the front as I can't get the camber adjusted right, the shocks are scraping the bumpstops.

              I ground the lip off the bumpstops cos I don't see any reason to ruin 2 new shocks for the sake of a useless chunk of iron.
