  • Quick Camber Question!

    Hi All,

Since replacing the bushes on the wishbones my camber seems out a bit.

The Surf looks 'knock kneed' from the front!

I know how to adjust it using the adjustable bolts through the wishbones BUT my questions are:

Is there anywhere on the top wishbone to adjust camber as well?

The reason I am asking is that if I pull the wheel in much further the shock is going to scrape against the bump stop!

There doesn't seem to be enough 'play' for me to pull the wheels in to correct the camber!

    I have had this before!

Also, I presume that both sides should be set identical?

My local places don't have a clue and can't be arsed attempting this!

    Thanks,

    Gary

Nah, the top is fixed, its all the cams at the bottom.

It can't really be wrong, unless something is fawked up, remember, if you alter the two cams differently, you'll mess up the caster angle

I'll bet, a £ to a pail of sh1te, you didn't mark the cams before you removed the old bushes.

Betcha a barmcake to a winegum I did!

Marking them wouldn't have made much difference.

The cam bolts were so corroded that they were barely recognisable AND the new bushes put the wishbones where they should have been.

I put new track rods on as well.

I reckon I'll have to adjust the camber using the mk1 eyeball and a spirit level.

When you say, 'fawked up' Tony, is there something I should know?

        Thanks for the replies fellas!

lol, I dunno, it generally means something tain't right, lol

Cos your top wishbone is fixed, the bottom one can only move as far as the cam will let it. If it was right before, the only thing thats changed is the new bushes.

The cams havn't jumped out of their guides, or has it slipped once you drove it if wasn't tight enough?

I don't think it was right before the bushes were replaced mate.

The offside tyre is worn on the inside.

If I set the cam bolts the way they were before the bushes were replaced then the wheels look slightly knock kneed.

BUT, if I go to adjust them to pull the wheels in it looks like the shocks are gonna be hitting the bumpstop lips, WTF?

            You understand better, See here:-

            Scraped Shock

I'm thinking of grinding that stupid lip off the bumpstops!

I cannot fathom what the hell is wrong here, if I were to wind the cam bolts fully in the ###### shocks get in the way!

I remember, I wonder if your chassis horns are bent from an accident or something.

Is it jacked up in those pics? if its not, you may have to much lift on the front, the angles of the wishbone are quite steep, far more than most truck I see.

That would make the shock hit, and would throw the camber out.

I don't think it was jacked up!

Do you reckon the torsion bars are wound up too much then?

Stock the wishbones are nearly parallel to the floor.

I havn't got any decent pics, but have a look through the gallery at stock trucks, you'll see what I mean.

Here's a pic taken last year going up a slight slope!

                    Do the wishbones look ok?

Bearing in mind that mine is supposed to have a 2 inch lift as well!

                    Cheers!

ok, this is our truck with the front wound up about 4", I'd fitted the back half of a 4" lift fitted, and needed to use it, I took the fornt diff and driveshafts out and used it like this for a while, the wheels here are splayed out at the bottom, and it dosn't look a lot different to yours.

I'd say this your problem, you may have to back the torsion bars off a little to get it right, but on the plus side, you can nearly fit 33's like our truck has..

                        Re

                        Ahh!

Right, I'm beginning to see what you mean!

The higher you lift the front by winding the torsion bars the more 'splayed' the front wheels become, right?

So, in theory, if I bring the front down an inch or so by unwinding the torsion bars then the front wheels will sit more centered and give me more leeway to bring the camber in.

Is it a good idea to have the Surf more lower at the front than the back?

I personally think it looks better!

                        Cheers Tony!

                        Gary

PS My camber isn't really that bad at all, I just thought that something was amiss! Having a slight negative camber isn't a bad idea, right?
