  • Painting Stock Rims

    Hi All,

I decided to paint my rims.

I'm totally fed up polishing them all the time.

The winters are far to harsh and whatever grit they put down now every time there is frost eats the hell out of my rims.

    My question is:

    What is the best paint?

I've heard that Dupli Color does some really good stuff but Hycote seems easier to get!!

Anyone done this and any advice on quality paint and clearcoat?

    Cheers,

    Gary

PS Was thinking of bronze, whatya reckon?

Not sure of best top coat paint but you need a decent etch primer to start.

      mornin' all

mine were shocking, lacquer all flaky & pitted.

What I did to mine over 2 years ago was:

      1. take wire brush in drill and scuff off all the flaking lacquer and key the whole of the wheel
      2. use a good alloy etch primer and applied about 4 coats
      3. over the etch primer, I used a high build primer to give a smooth surface for top coat, due to the pitting on my wheels this was necessary, yours will depend on how bad they are
      4. gloss black topcoat - guide coat plus 3 top coats
      5. lacquer, again at least 3 coats per wheel

did all 5 wheels over a weekend, picked a reasonably warm weekend to allow proper drying time at each stage.

Mine have held up and I got all the paint from local Wickes. Only thing I have had to touch up is when i had new tyres fitted the balancing weights were taken of the rim (I painted over them initially) but this was easy.

even if the paint gets chipped, as the paint is non specialist, patching is dead easy.

      go for it

        Re

I had a crack at the spare one today!

Went to the local auto factors and got the goodies.

All in all was a fairly straightforward job.

Did similar to above only I didn't need as many coats.

I didn't use high build primer as my wheels were pretty much damage free.

I prefer to have a bit of texture and not as smooth, I just prefer to have 'sharper' edges etc.

The wheel looks ok but I am unsure of the colour.

I got the Simoniz '5 wheel' steel colour and I'm having a few reservations with it.

Maybe when all 5 are done I will feel different!

Using a wire brush on a drill makes it SOOO much easier!

The sun was shining BUT there was a slight 'wind' that picked up during the second top coat and a few specks of dust etc. stuck to the paint.

It would have been perfect apart from that!

NEVER EVER try to fix specks etc. it just makes it worse!

The 'metallic' feature of the paint make touching up difficult, if it was 'flat' paint would be much easier.

I MIGHT do the other 4 and redo the spare.

Will get some pics up tomorrow and if I remember I'll do a write up!

The Autoglym silver wheel paint is supposed to be quite a good match for the modern alloy wheel colour?

            Thanks,

            Ray.

                    right

getting really fed up that I can't do piccies. How hard can it be???

Is it just a matter of taking the shots with a camera, setting up a photobucket account (assume just type in Photobucket in google) and then transferring them from teh camera to the phpotobucket account.

then do I just open a thread and atach like I would with MS Word, Powerpoint etc.

any advice would be a help as, if I get it wrong, I'm likely to throw the laptop out the window (as it can't be me, it must be teh technology, right?)

Take a photo, upload it to your PC, open Photobucket, click on upload photos/videos, your photo file should pop up, select photo you want to upload to Photobucket.
When uploaded, it'll give you some sharing options, highlight the code under the chosen photo that has IMG in front of it, press ctrl+c, go to the thread on here where you want the photo to appear and press ctrl+v.
