  • Couple of quick questions!

    Hi All,

I came to the conclusion that all my braking and shock scraping issues were caused by worn wishbone bushes.

Anyhow, I stripped it all down today and to my horror there are some aftermarket bushes in situ, does anyone know how the hell to get these out?

    There are stuck solid!

Also, are these the bronze bushes that should be replaced when you have the hub off?

    Upright Bronze Bush Outer?

    Upright Bronze Bush Inner?

Also, when the bushes have been replaced and the bolts being put back on is there anything I should do, I noticed an adjusting type set up on the bolts?

Are there marks on the wishbones that these have to line up to?

    Thanks!

You need to press them out.
You can do it using sockets in a vise too.

    Yes.
Place them in a bag and put them in the freezer overnight and get them out just before fitting, they'll go in easier.

      Thanks Vince!

There was an aluminium face plate on each side of the bush and a metal core?

I'm guessing they are similar to these type

      After Market Bushes

Not the big rubber type bush that Toyota supply!

I think the core is corroded to the wishbone!

I tried heat and a BFG but I'm afraid I might bend the wishbone.

        Yeah, thats the ones.

There are cam bolts on the lower arms, and those plates are part of the bolts. They have an indexing mark on them. You need to make a corrosponding mark to show their position before removal to ensure they go back in the same place, otherwise your camber angles will be out.

Methinks that either they were not adjusted correctly or the bush was shot, the right hand branch of the wishbone was too far in.

This is why my shock was scaping against the bump stop!

          Does this make sense?

          Shock Scraping

          Thanks,

            Certainly looks feasible.
Are your front tyres wearing evenly?

              Re

Tyres look ok to me, mind you they are General Grabber AT2's so there is plenty of thread on them.

The bushes are actually the original standard Toyota ones (doh! think I'm loosing it!).

What does a wishbone look like with NO bush?

Does it have a core or just 2 holes either side?

Has the standard Toyota one got a metal sheath around the rubber?

Trying to work out what is 'wishbone' and what is 'bush' before I have to start removing it with explosives!

Cheers for your help Vince, mucho appreciated!

Hang on, I'll scan some pages that cover bush replacement from my manual, it'll be easier than typing it all outon here.

                Stay tuned........

                      No worries.
If you need any other maintenance subjects scanned, let me know, I've got the hang of it now.

                        Will do mate!

Feel so damned isolated over here, got no-one I can call on with a Surf to help me do all this kinda stuff!

Gonna be fun and games getting them bushes out, I suppose I really need a vice to do it!

                        Cheers!

Drill a series of holes through the rubber bit of the bush, then cut/wiggle/push it out.

That will leave you with the outer metal bit of the bush in the wishbone. Clamp the wishbone in a vice, then dismantle a hacksaw and rebuild it with the blade through the centre of the bush. Carefully cut through the outer bit of the bush (being extremely careful not to cut the wishbone), then remove the outer bush with a hammer and chisel.

It will take about 30 minutes per bush and you will hurt yourself.

Yes, a vice would make it 1,000 times easier.

It pains me to say, not only do I NOT have a vice, I don't know anyone with a vice either!

                              I'll think of something!
