  • 3rd Gen not starting

    The title says it all.
Over the past month I've noticed the surf has been taking longer to start if it's been sat for a few days. Then it sounds v rough for 30 seconds or so.

Tried to go out this evening and the engine turns over but no start

I've tried the primer on top of the fuel filter and it does get hard. When this problem started I changed the fuel filter straight away so it's not that

    Please help,

I'm running on bio diesel, and the tank is down low so I may try and put a few liters of normal in; what do you guys think?

    Glow plugs/glow plug relay/fuse maybe?

Does it start ok once it's warm ?

Go the easy route first & put some normal diesel in.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Put 15 liters of diesel in still no start.

The glow plug light comes on for the usual 5 secs then extinguishes.

If I disconnect the fuel line from the filter going to the engine and pump the priming button should I get fuel coming through the filter?

You need to check the glow plugs, the light dosn't tell you they are working.

Then I'd undo the injector pipes and see if any fuel is getting to the injectors, you may have blocked the spill control valve, or other parts of the pump.

There's no fuel getting to the injectors, Mr AA man seems to think the fuel pump has been immobilized, the electrical connector on top of the fuel pump is getting no feed.
I wasn't aware there was an immobilize circuit on the Surf.

If it's been slowly getting more difficult to start doesn't that usually point to the pump rather than an immobilizer circuit.

How difficult is a pump change on the 3rd gen?

i take it he is on about the fuel pump solanoed? you can test that by running a wire of the + on the bat to the top of the solanoed you should hear it click and changing the pump is a lot off work hope this helps

                    Thanks for all the advice,
I'll be checking the fuses again this evening, just in case I missed it in the dark last night.

Has anyone changed the fuel pump before, I'd like a rough idea of what I'm letting myself in for

                      Not found any fuses blown.

However is the connector circled in the linked diagram the fuel shut off solenoid.

If it is then when the ignition is on should there be a supply to open the solenoid allowing the fuel through to the pump. At present there's no live feed so the next question which fuse, relay does this come from?

Nope, its the round black thing at the back that has the wire clipped to side of the pump and white plug.

The wires to it should have about 5v across them with the ignition switch on.

Its actually the spill control valve, and adjusts how much fuel gets to the injectors, only old Non-EFI trucks have a normal fuel shut of soloniod there.

If I'm reading you correctly I should be checking the other electrical connector for 5v. With the ignition on I'm getting 1.8v. Is this correct?

What does the solenoid circled do?
