been offered a surf 2.4 manual but.......

Hi would appreciate any advice here as I have been offered a surf a 2.4 td but there is a tapping knocking sound from the engine and it is a bit smoky. As I'm no mechanic could anyone give any suggestions as to what this could be and if I should go with it or run a mile lol everything else on the surf is fine and it drives well.

Is the knocking noise there all the time or just when the engine is cold?


Is it definitely a knocking noise or a tapping/ticking?

Does the noise increase with engine revs?

hi it is a tapping sound and it so the guy said started this after it was serviced and it started smoking at the same time
